The House sent three Sentriesâtwo men and a woman. They were dressed in matching black uniforms, with those interesting-looking wrap-around visors built into their hoods. Unlike the Sentry at the entrance to the High Hatâs office, none of these three looked like they were armed.
That didnât mean they werenât; Makk couldnât recall if the laws governing concealed weapons applied to the House, but had a feeling even if they did, the Septals would find a way to contravene it.
The head of the team introduced himself as Brother Corland, skipped the part where the other two had names, and then they were all heading for the garage.
âWill there be additional officers joining us?â Corland asked.
âIâm not going to make this a show,â Makk said. âWeâre not hunting down a fugitive and weâre not arresting them. We just need some questions answered.â
Corland stepped in front of Makk, which was the only way to get Makkâs attention, as he was actively interested in pretending the House Sentries werenât even there.
âYou mean to do this quietly, youâre saying,â Corland said.
âThat is what I mean, yes. I donât want some wandering UnVeeser to hit the Stream with the story of Dorn Jimbalâs arrest, and thatâs what happens if we show up on campus with ten cop cars blazing. Detective Daska and I will go to their residence in her unmarked and politely ask them to accompany us downtown, and thatâs all that will be happening. Do you think your team can handle that degree of subtlety?â
Corland looked at the other two. It felt like the three of them were conducting a conversation nobody else could hear.
âWeâre very good at subtle, detective,â the unnamed Sister Septal said.
âIf you want to draw as little attention as possible, we can help,â Corland agreed. âYour arrival on campus will draw attention, no matter how unobtrusive the vehicle. Whereas we will blend in.â
âYouâre going to sneak us onto the grounds, is that what youâre offering?â
âI think it addresses your concerns. And weâre driving an aero; Iâm sure time is a factor?â
Makk so disliked this idea, he was ready to go back to the part about sending in ten police cruisers with the lights up and making a scene. It offended his sense of how this power dynamic was supposed to goâwhere he was an officer of the law dealing with a security guard with a better-than-average clothing budgetâbut he also thought if they picked up Jimbal too loudly, Jimbal would clam up and the people above Llotho would press for formal charges.
It was a little easier to take if he thought of Corland as regular police, just from a different section of town, but he was having a lot of trouble making that leap. There was also the little voice in the back of his head (it sounded like Leemie) with warnings about Septal hit squads, and how if he got into the back of a House Sentry car, it would be the last time anyone saw him. This was silly and paranoid, but also very hard to ignore.
